Happy Halloween & Happy Thanksgiving! This year, we had pink Barbie, cozy sloth, Kim Possible, Captain in Star Trek, Everything Everywhere, a deer, a kangaroo, a cute fox, and many scientists. The kimchi Alec made was so delicious. We had a wonderful time.

Alec presented his work at the 2023 Duke Dermatology Pinnell Symposium. He is studying how translation is regulated at desmosomes in our favorite cells, “keratinocytes”. Good job, Alec!

The Lechler lab had a wonderful time at the 2022 ASCB (the American Society for Cell Biology). Dan and Ale had their work presented by posters, and Dan gave a talk about the roles of desmosomes in translational regulation. It is always exciting to share our work with others, learn something new in science, and meet old faces!

First, Mike received a T32 training grant to support his work investigating the transcriptional regulation and mechanisms of nutrient uptake in the neonatal intestine.
Second, Mike recently celebrated his birthday.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Mike Scales to the Lechler Lab. Mike is returning to North Carolina where he lived briefly as a child, though many of his formative years were spent in California. Mike’s wife, Michelle, and children, Scott and Ellie, relocated with him to Durham. He graduated from University of California, Davis with high honors and received a degree in Genetics. From there, he moved to University of Michigan where he completed his PhD investigating the role of Hedgehog signaling in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma where he was jointly mentored by Dr. Benjamin Allen and Dr. Marina Pasca di Magliano. Welcome, Mike!
